Many of these tiny villages frozen in time are fortified and located on hills brimming with surrounding natural beauty, where impressive mountain scenery make them a very theatric, dreamy scenarios.
Among many others, we can highly recommend a visit to the favorite Monsanto, declared the "Most Portuguese village in Portugal" which was built around the large boulders covering the hill. Also you could fall in love with the romantic Óbidos, with its colorful houses filled with bougainvillea and where you can also walk on the fortification wall to enjoy the beautiful views from above.
Maybe you would want to try the charming Monsaraz, where the whitewashed houses along with wonderful perspective of the huge water system surrounding its walls has been an inspiration for many artists. No to be missed is the visit to the historic and beautiful Guimarães, birthplace of Portugal’s first king, Afonso Henriques, with a very well-preserved medieval architecture and the important role it played in the country history.
